Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine

Toshiaki NISHIKAWA, M.D.

A Greeting from the Professor

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesia, Intensive Care, and Pain Medicine. Our primary goal is to provide the highest level of medicine dedicated to total care of surgical patients before, during, and after surgery, and also the relief of pain. In daily practice we have educated medical students and trained young doctors to become future leaders. A novel program we have in education involves training medical students and residents using a variety of medical simulators.

In addition to achieving excellence in clinical care and education, we have continued to perform clinical, translational and basic research in cardiopulmonary pathophysiology, mechanisms and preventive measures of CNS ischemic damage, clinical usefulness and basic pharmacology of alpha-2 adrenergic agonists, postoperative pain control, and other topics related to anesthesia, intensive care medicine, and pain management, for more than a decade.

Daily morning meetings are conducted for case presentations with anesthetic considerations, and discussion about recent articles related to our fields. The number of anesthesiologists in Akita Prefecture is insufficient for providing suitable anesthesia, so we seek to develop the next generation of clinical practitioners, researchers and educators. As for those interested in studying with us, we are willing to consider anyone who is interested in anesthesia, and clinical and basic research.
