Department of Radiology

Naoko MORI, M.D., Ph.D.

A Greeting from the Professor

The Department of Radiology was founded in 1972 by Professor Mutsumasa Takahashi, one of the most renowned professors in neuroradiology in Japan, and has a long tradition with successive professors such as Prof. Toshiro Kato (1981-1992), Prof. Jiro Watakai (1993-2008), and Prof. Manabu Hashimoto (2009-2022).
The Department of Radiology plays a central and leading role in the introduction of AI into medicine, and therefore, our educational philosophy is to provide education that enables medical students to experience the rapid progress of diagnostic imaging and its potential for the future through the introduction of AI, analysis methods and new imaging methods. While radiology and medicine are becoming increasingly digitalized and automated, I believe that only education can be passed on from person to person in an analog manner and be handed down to future generations.
As for research, we are interested in MR diffusion-weighted imaging, perfusion imaging, MR conductivity mapping, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, texture analysis, nuclear medicine, IVR, sociology, and other research fields, prognosis prediction using images in radiation therapy, research on treatment efficacy evaluation, evidence of individual IVR procedures, research on safety management, promotion of preventive medicine and health promotion. We would like to conduct sociological research to identify problems in radiology and to communicate them to the government. Research in radiology is closely related to clinical practice, and we would like to promote such research as well as educate generalists and subspecialists so that not only medical and graduate students but also doctors at local hospitals can work as radiologists while enjoying the fascination of radiology throughout their lives, and contribute to providing safe and secure radiological care in the community medicine of Akita Prefecture. We would like to contribute to the local community of Akita Prefecture by providing safe and reliable radiological care. I look forward to working with you.

The concerns of our department include diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology (IVR). Current areas of research include the following:

  1. MR imaging (diffusion-weighted imaging, perfusion imaging, MR conductivity mapping)
  2. Diagnostic Imaging using Dual-Energy CT
  3. Prognosis prediction using images in radiation therapy, research on treatment efficacy evaluation
  4. Evidence of individual IVR procedures, research on safety management
  5. Radiation protection
  6. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound
  7. Texture analysis
  8. Sociology, and other research fields
  9. Promotion of preventive medicine and health promotion.
  10. Personalized radiation therapy for the geriatric patients.
  11. High-precision radiation therapy of definitive and palliative intent.
