A Greeting from the Professor

Orthopedic surgery covers wide range of musculoskeletal fields including the spine, upper and lower limbs. We orthopedic surgeon aim to maintain and reconstruct the function and structure of the musculoskeletal system of the human body. We manage the diseases and injuries of muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves, etc. which make up the musculoskeletal system. As a core hospital in Akita prefecture, we manage difficult and challenging musculoskeletal diseases like severe spinal deformities, spine and spinal cord tumors, revision surgeries of total hip arthroplasty, and resection and reconstruction of malignant bone and soft tissue tumors.
We are conducting numerous clinical and basic research on bone diseases especially for osteoporosis. The achievement from the research has been contributed to the improvement of the quality of life in aged patients. Our department is one of the facilities capable to implement regenerative medicine for managing the traumatic spinal cord injury. We also have advanced equipment of the functional electrical and magnetic stimulation to restore the movement for paralyzed patients.
Important mission of our department is to provide quality education for undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop their knowledge and practical skills required to become excellent orthopedic surgeons. In our department, residents are encouraged to be enrolled in the graduate school to receive a doctoral degree. In addition, our department also recommends studying abroad for further research and clinical training in USA or Europe.
