Department of Neurosurgery

Hiroaki SHIMIZU, M.D. & Ph.D.

A Greeting from the Professor

The Department of Neurosurgery at Akita University offers the most up-to-date evaluation and treatments for all neurosurgical disorders, including cerebrovascular diseases, brain tumors, head trauma, and other related neurosurgical problems.

In cerebrovascular surgery, we employ both endovascular therapy and open surgery depending on the disease and patient’s condition. In brain tumor surgery, patients are sent from all over the Akita prefecture and we perform multidisciplinary treatments including surgery, chemotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery in collaboration with other departments such as radiology, oncology and pediatrics. In functional neurosurgery, we perform surgery for trigeminal neuralgia and facial spasm. Neurosurgical operating rooms are equipped with image-guided stereotaxis, neuro-endoscopy, brain mapping, and various neurophysiological monitoring. These facilities, as well as an endovascular suite and a stereotactic radiosurgery system, help us provide safe and successful treatment of some of the most complex intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, brain tumors, cerebral ischemic diseases and others.

Our training programs are designed to promote understanding of neurosurgery (including microneurosurgical techniques and skills) and to inspire a multidisciplinary approach to achieve the best clinical results and a scientific spirit of inquiry. Our research programs have also recently expanded, particularly in the areas of ischemic brain injury and brain tumor molecular biology in collaboration with basic research departments in Akita University as well as in Japan and overseas. Our goal is to provide the excellent care to patients with neurosurgical disorders, and this is accomplished through the advancement of scientific knowledge and technical expertise.

Sincerely,

Hiroaki SHIMIZU, MD
